NGC 247 is located 11.8 million light-years away from us, with a diameter of about 70,000 light-years.
The galaxy's angular size is 19.2 by 5.5 arcminutes.
NGC 247 has a well-visible void in photographs, which is why it is called the "Needle's Eye" galaxy.
It is located in the constellation Cetus.
It is difficult to observe from mid-latitudes in Russia.

Nearby is a group of 4 galaxies called the "Burbidge Chain".
This group of galaxies is located about 350 million light-years away from us, which is almost 30 times farther than NGC 247.
