The Whirlpool Galaxy (M51) is a spiral galaxy in the constellation Canes Venatici, located at a distance of about 27 million light-years from Earth.
It was discovered on October 13, 1773 by Charles Messier. It got its nickname "Whirlpool" because of its beautifully twisted structure, resembling a whirlpool in water.
The object's brightness is much higher than that of the Milky Way. The galaxy has a satellite - NGC 5195, both are clearly visible in an amateur telescope, and both can be distinguished as one point even with good binoculars.
