The Pacman Nebula (NGC 281, other designations — IC 11, LBN 616, Sh2-184) is an emission nebula in the constellation Cassiopeia. It is named after the character from the arcade video game of the same name — Pac-Man.
Discovery: The nebula was discovered by Edward Emerson Barnard on November 16, 1881.
Characteristics
Distance: about 10,000 light-years from Earth.
Apparent dimensions: 35.0' × 30.0'.
Apparent magnitude: 7.4.
Radius: 50 light-years.
Fluoresces red under ultraviolet radiation, the source of which is the hot young stars of the open cluster IC 1590.
