Galaxy M101 was discovered by Pierre Méchain on March 27, 1781. He later reported it to Charles Messier. Messier verified the object's location and added it to his catalog as one of the final entries. Its distance is estimated to be about 21 million light-years, with a diameter of roughly 170,000 light-years.
