The barred spiral galaxy NGC 6946 is located approximately 22 million light-years away in the constellation Cygnus. It was discovered by William Herschel in 1798.

The galaxy has a diameter of about 40,000 light-years. It is rich in gas and dust clouds, where intense star formation is taking place. In 2015, using the Hubble and Spitzer space telescopes, a candidate η Carinae-type star was detected in the galaxy. This is an extremely large and massive star (over 100 solar masses).

When observed, the galaxy's image in the sky is heavily obscured by the interstellar medium of the Milky Way, as NGC 6946 lies close to the galactic plane.

Ten supernova explosions have been discovered in this galaxy.

The open cluster NGC 6939 is located in the constellation Cepheus at a distance of about 4,000 light-years. It was discovered by William Herschel in 1798. The age of this cluster is over 1 billion years.
