The California Nebula (or NGC 1499) is a large emission nebula in the constellation Perseus. It got its name because of its outline, which resembles the shape of the state of California. The nebula is located at a distance of about 1,000 light years from Earth. It stretches for approximately 100 light years in length, making it one of the largest nebulae in the sky. The nebula emits its light due to the ionization of gas, which is caused by the ultraviolet radiation from young and hot stars within it.
Inside the nebula, processes of new star and star cluster formation are actively occurring.
