Why 180-second exposures? What determines this choice? Why not 300 seconds, for example?

300-second exposures produce more defects under the same conditions, with almost no gain in SNR—at least not noticeable to the eye.
So, given the lack of clear benefit, I switched back to 180-second exposures.
The only advantage of 5-minute exposures in my case is saving disk space.
