The third object from the first night at SAO; on the remaining nights I shot with narrowband filters.
Barnard's dark nebulae B142 and B143 are located within three degrees northwest of Altair (α-Aql, mag 0.93) and are accompanied by a large number of other Barnard dark nebulae in the immediate vicinity, including B340, B334, B336, and B337, all within a two-degree circle. As Barnard noted, this particular nebula has an overall square shape about 0.5 degrees wide with the western side missing. Together with B142, which lies directly to the south, the combination of B142 and B143 is often called the "E" Nebula because, when viewed in a wide field, the combined structure resembles the letter "E".
