This is the first light of a straight-through Newtonian. The star shapes still need some work. Currently, an off-axis guider is sticking into the aperture, which is likely causing this effect.

Regarding gain, it's simpler - according to the manufacturer's specifications, it's at this specific gain that dynamic range boost occurs.
