A large chain of lunar mountains stretches along the southeastern border of the Sea of Rains. The mountain range extends for 600 km, with a maximum height reaching 5,400 m. In the northeastern part of the chain, the Apollo 15 mission module landed in 1971. To the west of the mountains lies the crater Eratosthenes, with a diameter of 58.8 km and a depth of 3,430 m. North of the Apennines are the Montes Archimedes, stretching 150 km with a maximum height of 2,000 m.
