2025rbs is already the fourth supernova in the last 65 years in this galaxy.
The supernova is classified as type Ia. The explosion mechanism:
- A white dwarf accretes (pulls in) matter from a companion star
- Upon reaching a critical mass of ~1.4 solar masses (Chandrasekhar limit), an uncontrolled thermonuclear reaction is triggered, leading to an explosion and the complete destruction of the star

Galaxy diameter: 130,000 light years
Distance from the Sun: 43 million light years
Angular size: 10 x 4 arcminutes

Background galaxies (NGC 7335, 7336, 7337, 7340) are located at a distance of 330-400 million light years.
