Focus is off, can't get it right—either I'm jerking something or just not tightening enough.

On the Canon whale lens, manual focus works fine handheld in "M" mode. Plus, I focus using the screen preview at 5x and 10x zoom—you can see on a bright star whether it's in focus or not.
