The filter is screwed into the reducer in the place provided for it.
Considering that on a color camera I change the filter only once for the entire series of shooting, the scheme is quite workable. And there is no chance of losing or breaking the filter - a couple of times the filter cell fell out of the holder as soon as the handle was touched...
