Looking at the halos from Duoband, I "freaked out" and processed two sessions of 32x120sec of California, taken with the UV/IR Cut and HaOIII filters using Sirilic in "multi-session" mode, and then applied the Pixelmath tool in Siril and made a combined image from RGB and Ha. As a result, no halos (it turns out there are none in the Ha layer). And the stars are now colored. Beautiful! Obviously, this is exactly how these nebulae should be photographed - over two nights (or one, but with two filters).
