ESO 215-25 "Mermaid" in Centaurus
Photo description / processing
The faint planetary nebula ESO 217-25, often called the Mermaid or Fighting Fish, in the constellation Centaurus. It is the remnant of supernova G296.5+10.0, which exploded about 14 thousand years ago, and is located at a distance of 4500 light-years from Earth. It glows mainly in oxygen and hydrogen. To bring out the delicate filaments, it was necessary to accumulate 33 hours in H-alpha and 17 hours in OIII. The total exposure in LRGBHaOIII is 58 hours. The stars are in RGB. Since the total number of files reached 700, some ingenuity was required to get WBPP in Pixinsight to process such a volume of data :)
It was shot from May 8 to June 8 at the remote observatory Isabis, Namibia
