While all normal people are photographing the lunar eclipse, I'm testing new equipment (I also shot the eclipse, by the way, it turned out so-so). First light of a homemade telescope on a homemade mount. Camera at the direct focus of a 216/775 mirror, focusing by moving the primary mirror. A training prototype, version 3, of a larger telescope - 300/1050. Mount on two harmonic drives of size 14, not fully debugged and originally designed for a smaller tube... Full Moon, towards the end of the eclipse.
The longest part is made of carbon fiber. It doesn't warp.
But yes, the early versions would deform even if you just looked at them ;)
Getting a milling machine for an apartment is overkill. One option is to laminate carbon fiber using 3D printing. But that will be for a larger version.
What's the difference from a regular one? It's just filler material. Sure, it'll be rigid, but it'll still flex the same way. I've been through all this before.
Plastic isn't for optics. For something like a focuser holder, fine—but anything in the optical path? Forget it.
This is not just plastic filled with carbon for printing, but genuine carbon fiber composite, made from oriented carbon fibers and epoxy resin. Its coefficient of thermal expansion along the fibers is close to zero.
If you mix carbon fiber with plasticine, it's still plasticine. The same applies here—it's still a PLA carrier or something similar. Of course, the stiffness will increase, but the CTE and all masses will be larger.

There are a few more photos in the channel.
