Located in the constellation Eridanus.
Distance ranges from 680 to 1,300 light-years.
Physical size is about 70 light-years.
Apparent size 180' x 60'.
It is believed that the nebula reflects light from Rigel, placing it at a distance of 680 light-years.
There is also a view that it is illuminated by the bright stars of the Trapezium in Orion, in which case it lies at a distance of 1,300 light-years.
