Messier 83 (M83), also called the Southern Pinwheel Galaxy, is a barred spiral galaxy located about 15 million light-years away near the borders of the constellations Hydra and Centaurus. It spans roughly 55,000 light-years across and is famous for active star formation and recent discoveries of a hidden supermassive black hole candidate.
